Gau Seva

HONORING AND PROTECTING THE SACRED COW

Gau Seva, or Cow Seva, is the selfless act of serving, nurturing, and protecting cows—beings revered in Indian culture as symbols of abundance, purity, and maternal care. For millennia, cows have supported human life through dairy, agriculture, and ecosystem balance. Today, however, many face neglect, abandonment, or cruelty, especially when they are no longer deemed economically productive.

The Trust is deeply committed to upholding the dignity and welfare of cows, guided by the principles of dayā (compassion), dharma (righteous responsibility), and loka-kalyāṇa (universal welfare).

Our Gau Seva efforts aim to provide comprehensive care to cows across multiple regions, especially where the need is most urgent.

Support for Gaushālās in Vrindavan: A Sacred Commitment

Vrindavan, one of the holiest towns in India and deeply connected with the life of Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is home to many abandoned and elderly cows. The Trust actively collaborates with several gaushālās in Vrindavan, helping ensure:

  • Infrastructure support for maintaining clean and humane living conditions
  • Provision of regular fodder, water, and shelter
  • Access to medical care, including treatment for injuries and chronic illnesses

These gaushālās not only serve as sanctuaries for cows but also preserve the gau-pūjā tradition, allowing devotees and locals to engage in this sacred act of service.

Street Cow Welfare in Maharashtra: Compassion in Action

In urban and semi-urban areas of Maharashtra, particularly in towns and rural highways, many cows are left to wander the streets without food, shelter, or care. These cows often face:

  • Starvation and dehydration
  • Risk of injury from traffic or human conflict
  • Lack of access to medical attention

To address this growing concern, the Trust runs field-based cow welfare efforts, which include:

  • Daily feeding programs for street cows, using locally sourced fresh fodder and clean water
  • On-call veterinary support for sick or injured cows
  • Rescue and coordination with local gaushālās for rehabilitation
  • Community sensitization on cow protection laws and humane treatment

These efforts reflect the Trust’s on-ground commitment to compassionate care, even beyond the shelter system.

A Holistic Vision: Cow, Culture, and Community

Whether through established gaushālās in Vrindavan or street cow care in Maharashtra,  the Trust’s Gau Seva initiatives are deeply aligned with:

  • Spiritual upliftment, by facilitating the sacred act of Annadānam and Gau Pūjā
  • Environmental sustainability through the use of cow dung and urine in organic farming
  • Community welfare, supporting cow-based livelihoods and rural employment

In doing so, the Trust not only serves the sacred animal but also revives and sustains a culture of gratitude, gentleness, and ecological harmony.
